கோயிலும் கள்ளரும் 34. 35. 36. 89 பணி மாலையும் மதுரைத் தலவரலாறும், ப.8. Military Consultations, Madras, 19th June 1755, Vol. 4. 1912, pp. 206-207. This Caste of Thieves became so powerful within these few years......not above two years since the caste in question, joining with a prince preténted a right to that crown, beseiged the city of Madura, for merely the capital of this kingdom, and taking it, kept it in their possession; however they did not enjoy it long, they being less able to defend a city in form, than to make a sudden attack". -Fr. Peter Martin's letter to Fr. Le Gobien, dated 11, Dec. 1700, quoted by Sathyanatha Iyer, History of the Nayaks of Madurai, Appendix B, p. 305. "These robbers are absolute masters of this whole country and pay no kind of tribute or tax to the prince... About five or six years since, he marched out all his troops to oppose them, and advanced so far as their forests; when making a great havoc of these rebels he built a fortress, in which he left a strong garrison to curb them. However, they soon shook of his yoke; for assem bling together about a year after the expedition in question, they took the fortress by surprise, razed it, put all the garrison to the sword and possessed themselves of whole country. From that time they have been the terror of the whole district". -Fr. peter Martin's letter to Fr. De Villete, dated 8, Nov, 1709, Quoted by Ibid., p.323. மதுரைவீரசுவாமி கதை, 87.
