or influence from any quarters. We are not made to wait for them in long queues, but rather they await us however odd the hour may be. Time and distance do not separate these characters from us. Though apparently primitive and outmoded in outlook they are really modern, young and up to date. Character-study is therefore an important part of literary criticism. The study of characters falls within the realm of appreciative criticism, which is one of the branches of literary criticism. Modern Tamil scholars have contributed their share with reference to the study of characters. We have Dr. Sethupillai's Ravana, the great king of Ilangai. Dr. M. Varatharajan’s ‘Kanaki’, ‘Mathavi’, etc. in the form of books. Many more scholars have also contributed their worthy share in this line. Yet a vast field even now remains untapped, thus providing ample scope of study for future scholars. Many go for swimming in the sea but only a few – a gifted few – return with pearls in their hands. On the same analogy, there are thousands of scholars who enjoy reading the epics and poems, but only a very few – the gifted few – who gather these pearllike characters from the ocean of literature.
