Tyaga Vinodan which is claimed by some as the specific title of Kulothunka III of the XII and XIII centuries. Others have referred to the repeated use of the word uttama for describing Rama. Uttaman is well-known name of the Chola King who preceded the great Raja Raja of the X century. Vira Coliyam's commentary, both the work and the commentary belonging to the XI century gives the example “Kampanaritai Perumai Ulatu” where Kampanar refers to Kampar. But this work is attempted to be brought down to the XII century, Vira Chola being identified with a son of Kulotunka I rather than with the son of Rajendra. There is again Purattokai anthology of the XIV century which contains verses from Kamparamayanam which is known there as Irannavataram and nobody can fix the age lower down. A XIV century Kannada inscription makes provision for the exposition of Kamparamayana – be it remembered, in the Kannada Country. There are indirect allusions to Kampan and quotations from him in the vaishnavite commentaries of Periya -v- Accan Pillai and his guru Nampillai of the XII century. Tara in Valmiki comes to receive Iliakkuvan straight from the bed, she shared with Cukkirivan and Nampillai's explanation that Tara rushes even as a mother will rush to her child at once without any change of dress etc. reminds of Kampan’s version where alone this explanation becomes relevant and significant. Here Valmiki is interpreted in terms of Kampan and here is a new tradition. Ramānuca Nurrantati praises Ramanuja as the Jeer of Ramayana and, this Ramayana is being interpreted as the Ramayana of Valmiki. From what has been hinted above, one is not prevented from arguing that since Valmiki’s popularity is older than Ramanuja what Ramanuja was responsible was the popularisation of the Tamil Kampa Ramayanam. 17.3
