and inference. ** Here Buddha does not mean the founder of Buddism, for he did not deal with logic and his teachings contained in the early Pali Pitakas are not logical treatises. Then, who is that Buddha, the logician? Stcherbatsky throws some sight on this problem. “Among the great names of Iater Buddhism, the name of Vasubandhu occupies an exceptional position, he is the greatest among the great. He is the only master who is given the title of the second Buddha. His teaching was encyclopaedic, embracing all the sciences cultivated in India at his time. Dignaga was one of his great disciples’. So, we derive that Cattanyar’s Buddha, the logician is none other than the master Vasubandhu, the author of Vadavidhi, Vă davidhana etc. The birth place of Vasubandhu was the same Magadha Country where the Buddha was born. ** Cattanar sings the glory of Magada in his epic. (XXVI 41–42). Perhaps, he too should have been a sincere student of Vasubandhu along with Dignaga and others.... References 1. Malaipa tuka fam, 11 Ζ 1 12. Ibid, 112. Maņimēkalai, XXIX–45.
