'stylistic use of synonyms falls into two categories (1) choice between synonyms and (2) combination of synonyms. Choice between synonyms is very important for style in poetry or prose. The following example will elucidate this principle. takkaar takavilar en patu avaravar eccattaar kaana-p-pa tum. – Thirukkura! : 114. In this verse the word eccam refers to ‘childran”. There is also another common synonym makka!. Though this word rhymes with the first word in the first line of the verse it was not preferred by the poet and eccam was used instead. eccam literally means ‘the remnants and thus pictures one’s children as ‘those who inher and exhibit the character of the parent'. But the other word makka! cannot bring out all these implications. ln kazıtanan karpinukkagıiyai (Kambaraamayanam) “He saw the adornment of chastity” kantanan “saw-he’ is used instead of Paart targan or nookkinan in order to alterate with the second word. + There is also another kind of choice where, in a construc tion the head words are chosen to suit the native or borrowed nature of the attributes. o * = - Շg. piratarna inantiri -- -- = “prime minister’ talaimai amaiccar } pr Combination of synonyms can be made in two ways: either the synonyms may occur at intervals or they may be juxtaposed. The first is called variation and the other collocation.

The technique of collocation is employed to make one’s meaning clear and more emphatic. In Tamil, there are such collocations called miimicai-c-col." eg. oo rikiyuyarnta. “to become high” 2.45
