Syntactially, the sociative and causal differ from the instrumental. If the underlying principle here were syntactical or grammatical relations, he would not have grouped them under one head. As they are represented by a single case-maker he has put them under one. From this one may conclude that his main concern, is to group the items which occur with a particular case-form. At the same time, one finds that he has not completely ignored the grammatical relationship. To quote one instance. Tolkā ppiyar says that the relationship of inhabiter and the inhabited is represented by the 6th case. (Tol. Col. 79)*. When he speaks about the free variation of the case, he says that Vâlccikkilamai can be represented either by 6th or by the 7.h case. (Tol. Col. 100).
