2–3–39 wherein he lists certain words which require a 6th caseform optionally. The words master, ruler' etc. listed in the sutra show that the 6th case denotes possessive relationship. Tolka appiyar, on the other hand, says that the 6th caseoccurs in the sense of killamai (relationship) which is of two types. Viz tarkitamai and pirtin kilamai. I hus, according to Tolka ppiyam the 6th case is possessive case, whereas in Asia (Ilhyayi, possessive is one of the functions of th с ( l cusc. Thus, it is clear that the method followed in the treatment of cases by Panini and Tolkappiyar is entirely different. Panini's is based on the karaka or the deep structure relationship. His case system shows the semantically relevent syntactic relationship existing between noun and the verb or between the noun and the forms other than the verb. Tolkāppiyam presents, a different picture. His definition of cases is followed by a list of items which occur with a particular case form. The chapter Varrumai mayanikiyal provides with varried informations such as free-variation of cases, place of occurrence of case-forms in a sentence etc. 259
