This confirms they are longsegments. The kymograms and spectrograms show the differences of the segments as onset of the following syllable or coda and the onset of the preceding and the following syllable respectively. If it is an onset the closure is gradual and release is sudden but if it is a coda and onset both the closure and the release are sudden. The spectograms will clearly show this. Both the quantitative and qualitative non-vocalic sounds are sequences. 4 Conclusion The long vowels are produced as single segment and the long approximants, obstruants and sonorants are perceived as sequence. This difference for approximant alone is actually made in the articulation itself. The articulatory differences are faithfully recorded by the instrument also. For the sonorant and obstruant the difference is not made in this articulation but low energy tending to weaken the formants is noticeable. All the vocalic sounds are single and the vowel quantity is functionally suprasegmental. The non-vocalic long sounds are sequencial and the quantity is functionally segmental. Reference 1.
