Various functions of Infinitive in “Cuntarar teevaaram” Miss K. SARAswAthi Annamalai University Infinitive plays a very important role in Tamil Syntax. It takes an important part in uniting two or more simple sentences into a complex one. Infinitive is considered as equal to verbal noun. If we examine thoroughly we can find that infinitive can be substituted in the place of a verbal noun in any sentence. Infinitive can also occur in the place of verbal noun plus some case suffix, and do the same function as that of verbal noun. For example, · avan alaikka maan vanteen ’ In this complex sentence we find two simple sentences viz. (1) avan alaittaan (2) atanaal maan vanteen. We unite these two sentences into one by transforming the finite verb of the first sentence plus the causal adverb (atanaal) into a verbal noun plus instrumental suffix-aal. Now we get the sentence,

  • avan alaittataal naan vanteen ’

Once again we can substitute an infinitive in the place of that verbal noun-Haal. Thus we get the former sentence. 266
