Overcoming Hiatus S. Y. SUBRAMANIAN Madras In Tamil the vowels ‘i’, ‘ii' and ‘ai' when followed by any vowel get “y” and other vowels get ‘v' and ‘e’ getting either of the two. Telugu and Malayalam have the “y” as connecting particle as in maa + amma = maayamma of the former and aa + adlh = aayaalh of the latter. Here we introduce a consonant between the vowels to feciliate easy pronunciation. In English we have a fusion of both the vowels to form another vowel nearest to both in sound. Sanskrit grammarians have written elaborately about Deerga and Guna sandhis as this method is named by them, surya--asthamana=suryaasthamana; Gowri-Hisah = Gowriisah; Raghu-Futhamah = Raguuthamah, Ramaa+iisah= Rameesah; Ganga + udhaam=Gangoodhakam. In Tamil also we find such *fusions as in Mara+atiMaraati (மர + அடி = மராடி) Kulha+aambal = Kulhaambal (ear--obus =garribuš). In spoken Tamil also such fusions are found; ammaa-Hatithalh–ammaatithalh (→thunt-Fello-à &mér– oftbunriq-545tair). The fusion of the two vowels may also yield place to a diphthong as in Krishna-Heeka = Krishnaika; Gangaa-i-oogha = Gangougha which is called Vriddi sandhi in Sanskrit. There is a third way of overcoming hiatus. In this, one of the vowels, cspecially the first one is elided leaving a consonantal base for the following vowel. 29 |
