Lord of gods and as one whose greatness is beyond the understanding of even the eminent sages. The Viyuuka doctrine is actually referred to (3:81–90). Among the divine descents of the Lord, those of Kuurma, Varaaha, Narasimma, Balaraama and Kiruttina are glorified. References are available to the inner control of the Lord (3:81–90). Among the holy shriness, those of Tirumaalirunjolai and Iruntaiyur are graphically described. Muruka gets fine treatment together with the ancedotes showing his greatness. Some of them are to be traced to earlier Tamil traditions. Tirupparankunram is the only shrine described here. The Paripaatol collections represent, as far as theistic matters which they contain are concerned, a system of thoughts which represents a happy and healthy blending of the traditions recovered in the Sanskrit texts and in the Tamil traditions. The note worthy future of this kind of treatment lies in the fact that what was handed down from the Sanskrit sources was given a shape and finish that is matchless and unexcelled even by the sources. The following aspects are worth noting for the unique treatment of the matters in the Paripaatal. (1) Tirumal is the Lord of all. Gods and demons though treated as inimical have Him as the Lord. Hence it must be admitted that He has no friend or enemy thus proclaiming His impartiality (3:54–58). (2) He has no specific form. If he has one, He could be described with definite features (Ibid Vishnu Puraana 1:19–37). However, He takes a form which His devotees are eager to visualize. (3) Many a phenomenon is impressive. The clouds, sky, earth, hills and others are attractive and reveal the creative aspect of the Lord (4:25-35). In a way, this lends support to a doctrine which became prominent, later, namely, God is both the material and instrumental cause for all effects. (4) At the time of deluge, 402
