main divisions, viz., the Oral Literature and the Written Literature. Folk songs, folk tales, ballads, legends, myths, fables and proverbs form the ‘Oral Literature’. They are transmitted orally from one generation to the other. The Oral Literature which is also known as “Folklore” had its genesis among the unnophisticated rural folk of yore. Folklore is the oral literature of the people, by the people and for the people. On the other hand, the Written Literature that consists of epics, short ntories, poetry, novels, essays, plays, etc., are the productions of the individual writers whose names are known. The former is meant for all, whereas the latter is meant only for the educated. Proverb is a part and parcel of the folk literature. Its role in forming - the opinion of the populace is very great and significant. Economics: Economics is a practical science which is based purely on common sense. The ordinary man may not know the various theories and principles of academic economics that are taught in the class rooms of the Colleges and Universities. He may be even totally ignorant of Adam Smith, Ricardo, Alfred Marshal J. M. Keynes, Lionel Robbins and other leading Economists. It can be said without even an iota of reservation that he possesses a sound knowledge of practical Economics. The very fact that a number of Proverbs (bearing on economic thought) came into being bear ample testimony to the profundity of practical knowledge of economics of the laymen. “Cut your Coat according to the Cloth.” It is an English Proverb which is the outcome of applied Economics. ‘Stretch your feet according to the Mat*. This is the parallel proverb found in Tamil and Kannada. “Paaikku thakunthapadi kaalai meettu' – Tamil : “haasige iddashtru kaalu chaachu' – Kannada. The whole implication of these proverb is that ons’s expenditure must be within one’s income. In other words, every individual 39
