AN INTRODUCTION Sri N. Subbu Reddiar, well-known for his prolific output of publications, has achieved a singular distinction among nonpsychologists who have produced a valuable work in Psychology. The work which it is my proud privilege here to introduce,—KALVÍ ÜILAVIYAIL—, is a competent text-book for teachers in Educational Psychology. The author has taken great pains to draw his material from standard psychological works and has vastly succeeded in presenting it through the medium of Tamil with remarkable effect. In so doing, he has made a noteworthy contribution not only to the National Programme of encouraging the publication of Scientific Works in the regional languages, but also to the wealth of the Tamil literature itself. Sri Subbu Reddiar’s glossary of technical terms in the domain of Psychology would have challenged the ability of the most recondite and inspired Scholars for rendering into Tamil. The Tamil equivalents for psychological terms evolved by the author would themselves constitute a rich and enduring contribution to the repertory of scientific words in the language. Any system of Educational Psychology has to recorcile at least three fundamental interests : (a) It should present a body of principles widely acclaimed to be valid ఖ a science; (b) it should be practical of application; and sc) it should not be landuly out of harmony with the conceptions of personality and the system of values reflected in the authentic culture of the region where the educational process is being tried out. I have no doubt that as a writer of impressive achievement, and a teacher with varied experience, the author has responded in this work to the challenge of all three difficult demands. As a n orm-professional student and thinker, Sri Subbu Reddiar is in a happier position to reconcile the first and last objectives than the professionals. He has also the advantage of rare gifts in achieving high standards of exposition.
