171 SUNDARAMURTHI SWAMIGAL Sundarar was born at Thirunavalur (5055m or systif) in Thirumumaipadi Nadu (3050p& Lil in 14 son G) where the entire atmosphere was full of spiritual vibrations and Saivism was well established. His parents were ardent devotees of Lord Siva. His father was Sadayanar (#sol-u(gyri) and his mother was Isai-Gnaniar (Qoos &m Gafurtif). They named their child “Nambi-Arurar” (p5lbl? -oesourif). The term “Sundarar” came to describe him either because he was extraordinarily hand some or because that was part of the name that he bore in Kailasa before he took birth in this world. According to legend, one of the Lord's attendants in Kailasa, Alala Sunda rar, fell in love with two of Parvathi's maids, Kamalini (succosus) and Aninditai (osoft figsma). Consequently all the three had to be born as mortals. Sundarar wept bitterly for being separated from the Lord. He begged that he be taken back to His Lotus Feet, and re-instated and thus be redeemed from the path of evil. Lord Siva granted his reզueՏt. Sundarar, therefore, was born as Arurar (orif). One day the child was playing with a toy-cart outside his house. King Narasinga Munaiyaraiyer (pgräänäs (p&rusotrust), who was passing by saw the charming child. His heart yearned for the child. He requested the parents to leave the child under his sost cr care. The parents agreed. Although he was brought up in the royal household, he was also taught Vedas and Agamas. He looked like a prince and lived liked a sage. His mind was sct in Siva. When it was time for his marriage, his father Sudayanar proposed the daughter of Sadankavi Sivachariyar (*Lifiasco Gaisramiflurrif) of Puthur (LH3&strf). Elaborate arrangements were made for his marriage. -11–
