481 There were coins called Phuli Huns of varied types. The Parangipettai Hun could be exchanged for 2 Chakrams and # Fanam and the Nagapattinam Hun for 2 Chakrams and 1: Fanam. - Some coins called Konikkasu and Sanarkasu and some of the small denominations by the name Rukka and Dakka were also in vogue. Ekoji accorded permission to the Dutch to mint Fanams and Varahans. There was a mint at Tarangampadi during Pratapa Singh's time and another at Tirumarugal during Amar Singh's time. At Tirumarugal Durga Dakkas were minted at a cost af 96 kasus for 1000 kasus. The Samastanam * value of the coins varied from the market value on various occasions, Serfoji II made a good collection of coins from various parts of India and preserved them in the 'Kalyan Mahal'. It seems the collection was lost, on being sent to the Resident by Sivaji II for some exhibition, the venue and time of which are not known. 13. Weights and Measures Weights: There are references to small weights as tola (Gérsuas) and tonk (Croid) and three tonks make a tola. There were also the weights —manangu, veesai and seer (Goff). Three tolas make a palam, 8 palams a seer, 8 seers a viss, 8 viss a manangu or maund and 20 maunds a kandy or baram. Dry measures: 84 seers make a marakkal. There were .the kalam and padi also. Surveyer's measure: Lands were measured by a rod of 14 feet in length. They were defined in terms of veli, ma and kuzhi. 20 ma make a veli. Cubit (&pgth - muzham) and span (*for -san) were smaller length measurements. 14. Judiciary We are in the dark about the courts or the administration of Justice before the days of Amar Singh. It is said that the Judges were very corrupt under Amar Singh. During the days of Serfoji II, the fourfold judiciary came into existence. They were the Mudrita Sabha, the Dharma Sabha, the Nyaya Sabha and the Nyayadeesa Sabha. In the Dharma Sabha, the original side suits were tried and in the Mudrita Sabha he small csuse side suits. There were some courts called Pratishtitha Sabha and Karbar Prasangam. 61
