482 The suits were classified under several heads as Rinathanapada. Prakirnakapada, Sahasapada, Neekshapada, Nikshepapada, Steyapada, etc. The scale of court fees was graded according to the amount of the suit. There were Judges well versed in Sastras. They delivered their judgement according to the old gentoo codes of law as told in the books like Vignaneswariyam, Smriti chandrika etc. Judgements were as a rule not delivered on the days when the Vedas should not be chanted. Some cases were tried by a full bench consisting of five Judges. - The punishment that these courts meted out included imprisonment, fine, corporal punishment, etc. - By an act of Parliament, the Supreme Court was constituted at Madras. There was also a court called Sadar Adalat or Chief Civil Court for hearing appeals from provincial Courts and another court called Sadar Amin Court. When the Raj became extinct in 1855, the jurisdiction of the British courts extended over the fort. 15. The Temples and Religious tolerance A modi document gives a list of 64 Temples under rhe direct control and management of the Maratha Rulers. Some of the Temples were ancient dating back to the Chola period and some were Vaishnavite ones consecratsd by the Prabandam of the Alwars.
