504 Conservative were among the English journals subscribed by the Raj. There were also English and Tamil Dailies. The subscription for the Evening Mail was Rs. 6 per month. Though the Thanjavur Raj had no garrison, it maintained an infantry or police force for self-defence, sentry, escort and collection of rent. The Raj required about 1020 sepoys to serve as guards, who were also given military training. The weights and measures were checked and stamped. Before the advent of the British there were no bridges to cross rivers but there must have been some culverts, The old culvert of the Palavar was repaired in 1833. The bridge on the Vennar was completed in 1836.
