1551 (A. D. 1629). Shahji, after vanquishing Darya Khan, returned to Shivaneri, and named the child as Shivaji as he was born at Shivaneri.

In the mean time Jadaw Rao proceeded for an interview with Nizam Shah. Futeh Khan, the son of Ambar Khan, was at the helm of affairs. He thought that he would lose influence or power if Jadaw Rao was taken in. So he advised Nizam Shah to dishonour Jadaw Rao at the time of interview and told him, that, if he should return dissatisfied, he should be put to death. Nizam Shah cosnented to this ill-conceived plan. Jadaw Rao came; he was dishonoured and while he was returning enraged, he was killed.

Shahji came to know of the fate of his father-in-law and with disgust at the foul play of Nizam Shah, left Shivaneri and went to Satara with his family.

About this time there was a severe famine in the Deccan.

When Shahji was at Satara, his first wife Tukka Bai begot a male child in Saka 1552 ( A. D. 1630) and the child was named Ekoji. (He was Ekoji IV).

The vanquished Darya Khan remained on the banks of the river Tapti. Having heard that Jadaw Rao was assasinated and Shahji had left for Satara forsaking Nizam Shah, he once again invaded the territory of Nizam Shah. Nizam Shah was then at Dharagiri. Now Ali Adil Shah, thinking, that if Dhargiri were to fall in the hands of Darya Khan, he had to meet with difficulties, sent his army to attack that fort. As Delhi was informed about the action of Adil Shah, Aurangazeb came to Deccan and conducted warfare in his own way. Ali Adil Shah also waged war in another quarter. Nizam Shah had no other go than to yield to Aurangazeb. Then Aurangazeb directed his army against Ali Adil Shah and camped at Deogiri.

Now Shahji reoccupied his old jagir in Nizam Shah's territories and took possession of eight forts around Devagiri. The 96 Maratha families[1] offered their full support to Shahji and gathered under his banner.

The Sultan at Delhi, on hearing the congregation of the Marathas under Shahji, joined hands with Ali Adil Shah and encamped at the banks of river Bhima. Shahji had to fight with them for three full years. Now Shahji had a dream. His guardian deity told him that his son alone was
