destined to subdue the Mughals and that he should in the meanwhile make

peace with them. So he stopped fighting, gave up his territories and retreated to Satara.

Later on Ali Adil Sha invited Shahji and sent him to the South along with Randulla Khan with the intention of collecting the “Topha” due to him. Vira Bhadra of Ikkeri, Kong Naik, Jagdev of Kaveripatam, Gande Rao of Srirangapatam, Vijaya Raghava of Thanjavur, Venkata Naik of Senji,. Tirumalai Naik of Madurai were all conquered. Ali Adil Shah was much. pleased and rewarded Shahji by giving him the new province of Bangalore which he had conquered. Afterwards Bangalore became Shahji's permanent residence. Both Shivaji and Ekoji were educated there.

Now Shivaji was twelve years old. Lord Sambasiva appeared in the dream of Shahji and directed him to send Shivaji to Poona. Though Еkoji was younger than Shivaji, he deserved better honour as he was the son of his first wife. So he thought, and made hitn his successor at Bangalore in Saka 1562 (A.D. 1640). He then sent Shivaji to Satara and Poona.

While Shahji was at Bangalore Ali Adil Shah summoned him several times but in vain. So he sent Mustapha Khan, one of his nobles, to fetch him. Having scented the mission of Mustapha Khan, Shahji, having his son Sambhaji to help Ekoji in his absence, went to meet Mustapha Khan. Musta" pha Khan asked Shahji to be with him for about a fortnight to discuss matters of immense importance. One day at midnight, while all were asleep, Mustapha Khan bade his nobles to besiege the tent of Shahji. In the

scuffle that followed, Shahji fell down wounded. He was then arrested and conducted to Bijapur.

4. On receipt of the news of the capture of his father, The (ataate of sambhaji declared war on Mustapha Khan. Shivaji, on Shahji hearing this, marched his troops against Ali Adil Shah. The latter sent three of his nobles to capture Shivaji. They at first attacked Fort Sirobal and taking possession of it besieged Purandhar. Shivaji sent his general Bhim who besieged the fort Sirobal and killing Ballala occupied it. Shivaji repulsed his enemies and killed Muse Khan when he attacked a second time.

At the fort of Chitragal there was a free-booter called Vichchagathi Parama. He, with three thousand cavalry on each side, marched to Bijapur and plundered the city.
