C., and before 278 B. C., The destruction of sixteen Kingdoms mentioned by Taranatha, could not be thought of in Northern India. There are four references in the Tamil Literature of the Sangam age, including two by Mamulanar to the invasion of South India by the Mauryas. The Hathigumpha inscription of Kharavela mentions a jeague of Tamil states, which had been in existence for 113 years and was a source of danger to him, There fore this formidabale league must have originated in 278 B. C. and this date falls within the religion of Bindusara.

In the light of the victories claimed by the Tamil Kings over the Aryan forces, mentioned in Sangam literature where are justified in thinking, that the league of 278 B. C, must have expelled the Mauryan Army. The probable partial unsuccess for the fact that he did not attempt the consequent of Kaling, so that Asoka could truely describe it as an unconquered country.
