மறந்தனபோக, மறவாதிருந்த பண்டைத் தமிழ்ப் பாக்கள், கி.பி. ஐந்தாம் நூற்றாண்டிலும், அதற்குப்பிற்பட்ட நூற்றாண்டுகளிலும் பல்வேறு தொகை நூல்களாகத் தொகுக்கப் பெற்றன.[In the V and latter centuries A. புலவர்களைப் புரக்கும் கரிகாலனின் கொடைவளம் பாராட்டும் பொருநராற்றுப்படை, அவன் சம காலப் புலவர்களுள் ஒருவராகிய முடத்தாமக் கண்ணியாரால் பாடப் பெற்றது.[Porunararruppadai which is a description of Karikal’s pattonage of poets, by one of his protegas, by name Mudattamakknniar, one of karikai’s contemporaries” Page: 336) ‘கரிகாலன் புகழோடு வாழ்ந்த காலம், பெரும் பாலும், கி.பி. நான்காம் நூற்றாண்டின் இறுதியும், ஐந்தாம் ori prairin or Got Lás (plå 4th.” [The most probable period when karikal flourished was the end of the IV and beginning of the V century, the central year of his reg being 400 A.
