A FEW WORDS

The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad - Psalm 126.3

A Dictionary of Literary Symbols in Tamil is the outcome of the UGC Major Research Project of 2003-2006. I sincerely thank the authorities of the UGC-New Delhi for funding this Project.

Texpress my gratitude to Dr.S.Krishnamoorthy, the then Director of the International Institute of Tamil Studies, Chennai 600 113, for his interest in the implementation of the Project; and showing continuous concern in its progress; and giving all sorts of timely. help.

I am thankful to the members of the Selection Committee for choosing the proper person Ms.J.Saraswathi for placement as Project Fellow. Her unmitigated work and co-operation has been of much help in the completion of the Project to this extent.

The Dictionary would not have been materialized without the support of the academic stalwarts Dr.S.V.Subramanian, Dr.S.Agesthialingom, Dr.R.Kasirajan, Dr.L.Ruth Joy, Dr.L.Gloria Sundramathy, Dr.K.Nachimuthu, Dr.A.Pitchai and others, with whom I could have discussions often; and some of whom had browsed through the first sample entries and willingly given their meritorious suggestions in formulating the dictionary. My sincere thanks to them. I am also greatful to the UGC experts Dr.Daniel Deva Sangeetham, Dr.V.Jeyadevan and Dr.M.Ravindran. My due thanks to our colleagues Dr.S.Sivakami, Dr.K.Bagavathi and Dr.S.Jean Lawrence who were also on other UGC MRPs at that time.

I appreciate with thanks, the assistance given by my research scholars, Dr.A.Manavazhahan in draft typing the material; Ms.K.Jayanthi, in the input of additional entries to finalise the work; and Mr.S.Kapilar in helping with the proof.

My sincere thanks to Dr.M.Rajendran, the then Director and Dr.K.A. Gunasekaran, the present Director especially for bringing this in print. I am immensely greatful to our office staff, headed by Mr.G.N.Veerabahu Subramanian, Deputy Director and Mrs.R.Parvathi, Librarian, for their co-operation, support and timely help.
