தொண்டை நாடு என்பது வட பெண்ணேக்கும் தென் பெண்ணைக்கும் இடைப்பட்ட நிலப்பகுதியாகும்.” ‘கரிகாலன் தொண்டை நாட்டில் காடு கெடுத்து நாடாக் கின்ை’ என்று தமிழ் நூல்கள் கூறுதலால், தொண்டை காட்டுப் பெரும் பகுதி காடாகவே இருந்தது என்று: கொள்ளலாம். வேற்காடு, ஆர்க்காடு, ஆலங்காடு முதலிய பெயர்களும் இன்றுள்ள காடுகளும் மலைகளுமே இந்த உண்மைக்குப் போதிய சான் ருகும். அந்நாட்டில் முதலில் ஆடுமாடுகளை மேய்த்துக்கொண்டு குறும்பர் என்னும் இனத்தவர் இருந்தனர். அவர்கள் தொண்டை நாட்டை இருபத்து நான்கு கோட்டங்களாக வகுத்து வாழ்ந்து, வந்தனர் என்பது பழைய வரலாறு. சோழ நாட்டுப்.
