In naming the letters in this dialect, those which are short are distinguished by the affix 4 rub, and those which are long, by & T Tuh; thus, அ is termed அகரம், and ஆ, ஆகாரம், த, தகரம் and or, &msm sub. Hence, Thiruvalluven says, அகர முதல வெழுத்தெல்லாம், & c. The alphabet begins with 9. In the Shen Tamil or higher dialect the Grantham characters are never used; but to the letters employed in the common dialect, one consonant is added, which is termed egli Sub, and is written thus 6% : this letter resembles the consonant G, obscurely uttered, with a deep guttural sound : it has the force of a consonant, but is never joined with a vowel; the effect, therefore, of inserting it in any word, is to render the syllable which preceds it long by position, although by nature it be short. Thus, if 9.g. be written yogi, the first syllable becomes long in
