Accounts of the imam Sarakanei Village. Position : The inam Sarakanei Village is situated in the new district of Ramnad some 19 miles east of Sivagangha & forms part of the Zamin of that name. Origin of the Village: Rev. Fr. Rossi, S.J. first settled at Maraneri, east of the present Sarakanei; a quarrel arose among the several castes of Maraneri and forced Rev. Fr. Rossi to leave the place. About the year 1750 he retired to the place which is now Sarakanei; built there a church and slowfy the people of Maraneri came and settied round him. But the manibam granted to the church bears the name of Maraneri in the officiai documents. Grant of the Manibam: The iocal tradition recites that towards the year 1780 a certain Marudappa Servakaran who after serving in the places of Ramnad and Sivaganga had taken hold of the Zamin of Sivaganga made to the church of Sarakanei for its maintenance the grant of the gramam of Maraneri as a manibam. Anyhow, the patayam or donation deed on a Copper sheet, signed not by him, but by the then Zamindari of Sivaganga, Peria Udayar, Tevar. It is dated 23rd December 1800 A.D.” The priest incharge at that time was Arulandarswami, who had come from Goa in 1788.
