At this time the English wanted to capture Devikottai. As Tanjore was their ally, they wanted to have an excuse to take the port. Just then an English ship was sunk and many of its precious articles had been taken away by the king. So they captured Devikottai. Nagoji Rao, the Maratha commander took back the fort. English attacked again. Pratap's forces, while crossing the Coleroon were caught in the mud. Now Pratap and the English signed a treaty in 1749 A.D. by which Devikottai was ceded to the English. =

The Nizam of Hyderabad was informed of the happenings in the south. He marched to Tiruchirapalli, defeated Morarji Ghorpade and after handing over the fort of Tiruchirapalli and Arcot to Anvaruddin, left for Hyderabad.

Maphuskhan, son of Anvaruddin demanded heavy tribute from Pratap. Pratap requested for a remission of peshkush. Maphuskhan invaded Thanjavur but he was defeated.

To avenge the defeat of his son, Anvaruddin led a second expedition against Thanjavur. The forces of Thanjavur under Manoji annihilated the invaders. Anvaruddin was about to be killed but he was saved by the timely intervention of Pratap.

Now Chanda Saheb was released from Satara. He was advised not to interfere in the affairs of Thanjavur. He marched towards the south with his ally Irasat Mohidin Khan of Adoni, obtained the help of the French, attacked Arcot and killed Anvaruddin.

His son Muhammad Ali fled to Nagapattinam, then took refuge at Thanjavur for three months and went to Tiruchirapalli.

It was by this time, Tulaja, Pratapa Simha's son married Rajasa Bai. Pratap's first wife Ahalya Bai died. His fourth wife Eswant Bai gave birth to two daughters. By his second wife Annapoorna Bai he got two sons. One was named Ramaswami who, later on, became known by the name Amir Singh. The other was Krishnaswami who died at his infancy.

Chanda Saheb and Irasat Mohideen Khan while marching against Tiruchirapalli demanded money from Pratap. As he refused to pay, they laid siege to Thanjavur which lasted for about three months. Now hearing that Nazir Jung had come with a formidable army, they withdrew and fled to Pondicherry. Then with the help of the French they fought with Nazir Jung and killed him.
