what are my needs. you have been blessing me by granting me my desires. You who, in Thiruvannamalai, took the shape of a leaping flame, whose source and Crown could not be located by Vishnu and Brahma, has shown me boundless compassion by seeking me out as a devotee. I seek from you only that which you think I need. If there is any other boon that I require even that would be your desire!”

Such complete acceptance of the Omnipotence of the Divine and the aspiration to live a life of devotion is the philosophy of surrender extolled by religious scholars such as in the Vishishtadvaitha philosophy. There is nothing in this world that we can have unless the Divine desires it. Everything happens as willed by the Divine. What other boon is required by one who is steadfast in his devotion to the Divine? Such an individual who realises that all things and deeds are of the Divine, has attained a maturity called ‘Nirvana’, a state beyond all pain and pleasure.

And, is that not the aspiration behind all progress?
