The party is headed by the wellknown Tamil scholar, T. M. Bhaskaratondaiman, who is making a special study of temple architecture and sculpture in North India. All along the way he is jotting down notes to write a series of articles and books.

Tondaiman a retired District Collector of Tirunelveli, was in high siprits when I met him in Bombay the other day. He told me that this was the first time he had undertaken such a trip and was enjoying it thoroughly. There had been some hardships on the way. “But that’s all in the game” he chuckled.

He had a hearty laugh as he described the manner in which he and his companions crossed a small river on their way to the cave temples at Badami, near Bijapur. They were drenched to the skin, but when they reached the beautiful temple of the 8th century A.D., they completely forgot about their discomfort. “It was worth all the trouble,” he said.
