(TAM 5.8, 40, 70). During 1749-1950 he printed in Halle/Saale. In 18th Century there these two books of Arndt were used in almost all German Protestant houses. Then he proceeded to translate all the four parts of the famous Imitation of Christ by Thomas à Kempis? (TAM 6, 7. 9-12, 38, 39, 88). Thus Schultze wanted to present the Tamils with the very best of German devotional literature. His theological works include the four parts of the Delightful Biblical Garden by Wolfgang Seber10 (TAM 62, 71-77). The present author of this essay is unable to ascertain who this Seber was, except that he was a pastor and was well versed in the writings of the Church Fathers. The sermons of Benjamin Schultze (TAM 61, 63-66) show his first attempts to preach in Tamil. It seems that a Tamil Christian should have written him these sermons which Schultze must have learnt by heart and repeated them in the Church.

Thirdly the two Tamil works (TAM 89 and 95) written or translated by Christopher T. Walter could be mentioned. As a man of his age and context he was unable to tolerate the Roman Catholics. So he wrote against them. He also translated the Portuguese Passion History written by John Earnest Gruendler (died 1720 in Tranquebar). This Passion History was meant for meditation during the Lenten Season.

Fourthly one could see the work of Tamils. Peter Malaiappa. translated Wilken's Communion Book (TAM 81). Among these manuscripts there is an important Tamil work that was aimed to challenge the European Christian
