A GRAMMAR OF THE TAMUL LANGUAGE. 22 20 CHAPTER I. OF THE TAMUL LETTERS. SECTION 1. Of the Number and Form of the Letters. 1. The Tamulians reckon thirty letters, which they call 6: of these twelve are vowels, eighteen consonants. The former they call ui, uir, the latter Ou, mey: as if they should say soul and body: nor altogether absurdly: for a consonant without a vowel is body without soul: hence also they call a consonant to joined us, that is, a dead vowels five are short, and are called which no vowel is letter. Of the twelve popyś: viz: 9, 8, ,, U. ST, e, p, o, Five are long and are called GBLGLÁS, viz: ., #, 1, o, u, 67, č. a, o, The two others which th Tamulians reckon among the long vowels ave im: fant dipthongs; viz., . ai and on, au. These twelve vowels here arrange in the Tamul order, 94, 35, F, 2, 4, 6, 47, ஐ,ஒ,ஓ,ஒளி mut 2.
