500 Religious minded people used to remain at Kasi for about a year and they were provided with all facilities for their stay at Benares. Once one Narasu by name, a blacksmith, wanted to dine along with the Brahmins. He was a favourite of the Tambiran at Kasi and hence the Tambiran sided Narasu. But the Brahmins did not allow the said Narasu to dine with them. The Tambiran, enraged at the activities of the Brahmins, closed the mess. The Brahmins lodged a complaint to Serfoji II. The Tambiran connected with this event was Arunachala Tambiran, a Junior to Sadayappa Tam biren, the then Head of Kasi Mutt, Tirupanandal. * Serfoji II went on pilgrimage to Benares during 1820–22 and he stayed in the Mutt of Kasi Tamồiran at Benares from 10–7–1821 to 23-10-1821. Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt at Kumbakonam Athi Sankara founded Mutts in five places one of which was Kamakoti Peetha at Kanchipuram. During the reign of Pratapa Simha ( 1739-1763), the head of Kanchi Kama Koti Peetha, while he was camping at Udayarpalayam, was induced to go to Thanjavur. The Pontiff, who wanted to reside at some place on the banks of the Kaveri, preferred to reside at Kumbakonam. Thereupon the Rajah built a Mutt for him at the Dabir Agraharam, gifted him with inam lands, utensils of silver and gold, jewels, horses and elephants. From the time of founding the Mutt at Kumbakonam, H. H. Sankarachari was paid annually large sums of money for the conduct of worship of Chandramouleeswar and of the Vyasapuja in the solar month Ashada. This grant continued perhaps upto 1798. During the period of Serfoji II a new temple was constructed and consecretion conducted in the Mutt at Kumbakonam. During the regime of Chandrasekharendra Saraswati V, there arose a conflict between this Mutt and the Sringeri Mutt regarding the repair of the Thatankas ( ear rings) and fixing them again to the ears of goddess Akhilandeswari in Jambukeswaram near Sri Rangam. The suit went on for 7 years and the Mutt had to spend a large sum towards the conduct of the case. One Ganapati Sastrigal of the Mutt requested the Rajah to donate a substantial sum for this purpose. Kanakabhishekam (showering of gold) was performed in 1801 to Sankaracharya Maha Devendra Saraswati IV. Sivaji II also performed Kanakabhishekam in 1833 and 1850.
