[Of these anthologies, the Agam four hundred seem to have been the earliest to be collected to gather, for its odes were made into an anthology by the orders of ukkirapperuvaludi, by Uruthirasanman, who, according to the scholiast on Iraiyanar Agapporul, presided over the meeting of scholars gathered to expound those sixty sutras...Some of them ancient and the rest belonging to the IV or V century A. தொகை நூல்களில், புறநானூறு. கி. பி. ஐந்தாம் நூற்றாண்டில் பாடப்பெற்ற பாக்களைப் பெருமளவிலும், இ. பி. ஆறாம் நூற்றாண்டில் பாடப்பெற்ற பாக்கள் சிலவற்றையும் கொண்டுள்ளது.. நான்கு தொகை நூல்களும் (நற்றிணை, குறுந்தொகை, அகநானூறு, புறநானூறு) கி. பி. ஐந்து ஆறாம் நூற்றாண்டுகளில் தொகுக்கப்பெற்றபோது, ஒவ்வொரு பாட்டுக்கும் திணை, துறை, பாடிய புலவர் பெயர் ஆகியன கொடுக்கப் பட்டன. இவ்வகையில் தான் நற்றினையும் , குறுத் தொகையும், அகநானூறும் நமக்குக் கிடைத்தன. ஆனால், புறத்திற்கு மட்டும், இவற்றோடு அப்பாட்டு பாடப்பெற்ற சூழ்நிலையை விளக்கும் கொளுவும் கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. [when the four anthologies were made up in the V and VI centuries A. D. for each ode was noted the name of the thinai, and perhaps turai, to which it belonged and the name of *ts author , That is how the Agam, the Narrinai and the Kurunthogai have come down to us.
