The Durgapur Steel Plant has been modified at a considerable cost to make stainless steel continuous cast slabs which are now being sent all the way to Finland for rolling into hot roll coil. With the setting up of hot rolling facilities at Salem, there is scope for considerable saving of foreign exchange. The project will provide direct employment to 2500 persons and will also generate considerable indirect employment in the ancillary and tertiary sectors. I will be grateful if you can give this your sympathetic consideration and have the project included in the Eighth Plan. While the work of doubling the capacity of the Plant by installation of a second Spensioner Mill is currently in progress, the question of installing hot rolling facilities at Salem as well as the proposal to include it in the Eighth Plan are also under the active consideration of the Government.
