PREFACE The justification for another edition of Muttollāiram seems to lie in the need for a thorough appraisal of the work as a source of history and sociology. The impression created by over-emphasis on the erotic aspect of the work needs must be removed and a motivation must be provided for a systematic search for the original as a source of history. However, it is not to belittle the literary value of the work which is fit to be ranked with any of the greatest Cañkam classics. My purpose has been to lead the readers both to an enjoyment of the artistry of the poet and to a perception of the social conditions depicted in the work. I have examined all the available sources and made a selection of the most authentic verses. I have also furnished variations in readings available in the commentaries. My thanks are due to Dr. M. Varadarajan, Professor of Tamil, University of Madras, Madras for enthusing me in my work and Sri K.
