increased by the necessity of referring to transactions of a remote period, as to have protracted my decision untill this time but the importance due to the representation made by a person of your Excellency’s exalted rank on a subject involving the honor and fame of a gentleman holding a high confidential trust under this government rendered it indispensible to the purposes of respect to your Excellency, of public justice, and of the delicacy and humanity due to the situation of an individual that my enquiries into the subject should be conducted with great caution, and that my determination of the questidh should be founded on the most clear and satisfactory evidence.

2. I am now happy in aquainting your Excellency that the measures taken by me for this purpose have enabled me to pass a decided judgement on the conduct of Mr. Macleod, the late Resident at Tanjour. It is not necessary to trouble your Excellency with the particular points, into the consideration of which I have been led in the pursuit of the truth, but it will be satisfactory to your Excellency's mind to know that I have found the representation transmitted by your Excellency and the Queens of the late Maharaz Tulzagee to Lord Hobart to be strictly correct, that Mr. Macleod having received from Amer Sing the stipends destined for the maintenance of the late Rajah's family withheld the money from that purpose to the great distress of your Excellency's family and to the disparagement of the Character of the Rajah Amer Sing, and finally that Mr. Macleod having by these means betrayed the trust reposed him by this Government has aggravated that offence (Sic) by producing false accounts to calumniate your Excellency.

3. In the grounds of these facts I have considered it to be my indispensible duty to punish Mr. Macleod in the most exemplary manner by removing him from the Company's Service, and I think it necessary to communicate my resolution on this subject to your Excellency, in order to manifest to your Excellency and to the World, the principles on which it is the earnest wish and intention of the British government in India to administer justice and to afford protection to the friends, allies, or dependents of the Company.

4. Having availed myself of the information which I expected to derive from your Excellency’s Minister Dettagee, I have permitted him to return to Tanjour; and recommend to your particular notice his fidelity and attachement to your Excellency's interests. Your Minister will communicate to your Excellency all futher particulars.

5. Having been informed by the late Resident Mr. Torin that your Excellency was desirous of restoring the accoutrements and arms of your Body Guard, I have delivered to Dettagee fifty pairs of pistols, and fifty hussar Swords, of which I request your Excellency's Acceptance.
