The humble petition of C. Subramania Bharati (Forwarded thro' the Suptd. District Jail, Cuddalore) May it please your excellency, It is more than a week ever since I was arrested at Cuddalore on my way from Pondicherry to Tinnelvely which is my native district. After many loyal assurances on my part, as your Excellency may well remember, the Deputy Inspector General (C.I.D.) was sent by your Excellency's Govt. a few months back to interview me at Pondicherry. The D.I.G. after being thoroughly satisfied with my attitude towards the Govt. asked me if I would be willing to kept interned partly as a war measure, in any 2 districts of the Madras Presidency during the period of the war. I could not consent to that proposal, because, having absolutely renounced politics, I could on no rea- son why any restraint should be placed on my movements even while the war lasted. Subsequently to that also, I have addressed several petitions to your Excel- lency clearing away all possible doubts about my position. Now that the war is over and with such signal success to the allies I ventured to leave Pondicherry, honestly believing that there would be no difficulty whatsoever in the way of my settling in British India as a peaceful citizen. Contrary to my expec- tations, however, I have been detained and placed in the Cuddalore District Jail Under conditions which I will not weary from your Excellency by describing now at any length but which are altogether disagreeable to man of my birth and station and full of dangerous possibilities to my health. I once again assure your Excellency that I have renounced every form of politics, I shall even be loyal to the British govt. and law abiding. I, therefore, beg your Excellency to order my immediate release. May God grant Your Excellency a long and happy life. JAIL SHEET Cuddalore C.
