Impact of Some Philosophic Thoughts in Sangam Literature "ΓΙ1 11 ι! S. SΑΤΗΙΥΑΜΟΟRΤΗΥ Kerala University The philosophic thought in Sangam literature is rare and is to be studical with keen observation. Most of the poems never have direct touch or dealing with philosophy. The poem of Kanian Poonkunranaar, Thirumurukattuppadai, Paripaatal and some songs of Kanchi ai e related to philosophy. Therefore we have to depend upon the commentaries and inferences to trace the philosophic thought. In this paper I am giving two possible identifications of philosophic thoughts one is from Paripaatal and the other is from Kalithokai. Another identification which is already given by Parimelazhakar in his commentary to Paripaadal has been cxplained. Though Kalithokai and Paripaadal have been postdated one cannot deny the fact that the ideas prevalent in them are of ancient tradition. It must be borne in mind that they mention Samkhya, Carvaka and Buddhist philosophies which are prior to the Sangam literature. The third poem of Paripaadal sung in praise of Thirumal gives us the twenty-five principles of Samkhya philosophy. According to the commentator Parimelazhakar (A. D. 1272), these lines (iii 77-88) explain nome othei than Samkhya philo 481
