I thank you fervently for your kindness in sending me your valuable literary productions. I have perused your சோமசுந்தரக்காஞ்சி with very great pleasure; and your metrical composition under the heading கையறுநிலை, reminds me of Milton's Lyoidas.' The jealous critic who has 'frowod' has, I am sure, only whistled for the wind; and, whoever he may be, his arguments are as silly as they are malicious. I am inclined to think that your ‘கையறுநிலை' is, in fact, one of the great pillars of your fame, and that it, in itself, suffices to prove your genius for poetry. The felicities of diction sparkling throughout the piece, the fervid imagination which has given birth to golden thoughts so many in number, the pathos which moves the reader with a veritable mesmeric effect, the grace and elegance of your style and the religious rudder of calm resignation which guides your poetic vessel as it glides on the troubled waters of bereavement- all these mark you out as the Tamil Elegist and one of the greatest poets of the day. I am perfectly sanguine that your கையறுநிலை' is destined to live as long as our language itself lives; and, thought, if I were to criticise your opponents, I would proceed from a different stand-point altogether, I am glad to find that you have already put a spoke in your critics wheel even from
